A holistic take on climate solutions
Sustainable building and liveable, smart and sustainable cities are a priority area in the Nordic collaboration, which offers many examples of comprehensive solutions with people in focus. In this edition of “Green Growth the Nordic Way” you can learn about how smart Nordic energy solutions to common urban issues shorten the route towards the Nordic carbon-neutral scenario – a scenario that need not cost the earth to implement.
The Nordic market is a living laboratory for climate-smart solutions. In a preview of the Nordic Green to Scale project, we present some Nordic low-carbon success stories that, if they were scaled up in other parts of the world, could make a substantial contribution to attainment of the goals in the Paris Agreement. You can also read about the Nordic Prime Ministers’ initiative for tackling climate change and other global challenges.

The Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM) is promoting bioeconomy networks in the Baltic Sea Region as part of its role as a Horizontal Action Leader in the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR).
There is a series of forums designed to promote the move towards a sustainable biobased economy in the Baltic Sea Region. Read more about the latest seminar at NCM's website.

A new global research funding programme on Transformations to Sustainability (ISSC)
Deadline for submissions is 31 May 2014.
Transformations to Sustainability will promote research on the most urgent problems of global change and sustainability — including climate change, biodiversity loss, water and food security, energy consumption, and poverty and growing inequalities.
Through its use of the Arctic, Russia tries to fortify the idea that it is a global energy superpower, writes Veli-Pekka Tynkkynen in the March issue of Aleksanteri Insight, a series of expert opinions published by the Aleksanteri Institute, University of Helsinki.

This background study is aimed at enabling fruitful cooperation between the Baltic Sea States in implementing and pursuing the 2030 Agenda and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and serves as a resource for developing governance for sustainable development in the region. Further, the report includes suggestions on how to organise the work for the global SD Goals in the future.

Baltic Sea Pilot Project: Testing new concepts for integrated environmental monitoring of the Baltic Sea (BALSAM) was a project to enhance the capacity of the Baltic Sea member states to develop their marine environmental monitoring programmes.
Focusing on gaps identified in HELCOM, BALSAM provided recommendations for marine monitoring in the Baltic, especially for seals and seabirds, non-indigenous species and benthic habitats. The project also provided recommendations for further coordinated use of research vessels as well as improved data management and infrastructure in the Baltic.
