"Save the Baltic Sea for Real" event at the European Parliament

Hazardous substances and plastics still pose big threats in the Baltic Sea Area. What has been achieved so far to “Save the Baltic Sea”, one of the three goals of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) and what progress is required for the future? How do we ensure that the Baltic Sea is undisturbed by hazardous substances, marine litter and plastic?

These questions will be discussed by Members of the European Parliament, stakeholders, regional representatives, researchers and the European Commission at the event “Save the Baltic Sea for Real EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region enabling progress –is it enough?” which will be held on 5 September at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The high-level event is being organised by the European Parliament’s Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas Intergroup (SEARICA), together with the CPMR Baltic Sea Commission, the Informal Baltic Sea Group of the European Parliament and Policy Area ‘HAZARDS’ of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region.

The meeting will offer the opportunity to debate the current state of the Baltic Sea from different perspectives. Researchers, representatives from the European Commission (DG REGIO, DG ENVI, DG MARE), HELCOM, and representatives of local and regional authorities, will exchange with Members of the European Parliament, including MEP Miapetra Kumpula-Natri, Chair of the Informal Baltic Group in the Parliament and MEP Gesine Meissner, Chair of the SEARICA Intergroup.

The event will offer the opportunity to draw policy recommendations for the future in view of the revision of the Action Plan of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region starting in Autumn 2018.

The discussions of the SEARICA meeting will feed in to the meeting of the Maritime Working Group of the CPMR Baltic Sea Commission which will take place in the afternoon of the 5 September, in Brussels.
