Ground Water Supply in Sortavala District
Lead Partner: Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment for Lapland (ELYLAP), Finland
By developing the use of ground water, the project aims to improve the quality of life in the Kaalamo and Ruskeala villages in Sortavala, Karelia. For years, low-quality water from Tohma River has been used for drinking which increases health risks.
The specific objective of the project is to develop design estimates for the construction of ground water intakes, treatment and pipelines for two pilot areas of Kaalamo and Ruskeala of Sortavala district with the use of the Finnish experience of ground water supply. The main outcome of the project will be a detailed technical plan how to build two underground water intake structures with pump elevation stations and water treatment units as well as the main water supply pipelines connected to the existing centralized water supply systems in Kaalamo and Ruskeala.
