The paper provides a background on the lifestyles’ impact on the biggest public health threat in Northern Dimension area, noncommunicable diseases.

Their risk-factors consist of smoking, harmful use of alcohol, excess and wrong type food, insufficient physical activity and workplace exposures leading into premature cardiovascular disease, obstructive pulmonary disease and cancer, obesity, diabetes type-2, and other diseases. This information is largely based on the recent publications of WHO “Global status report on noncommunicable diseases 2010”, “Global status report on alcohol and health 2011” and data-bases of the World Health Organization, EU and OECD.
